What are Autologous Serum Eye Drops?

Autologous serum eye drops (ASEDs) are topical eye drops derived from your own plasma (autologous means "self"). Platelets in your plasma secrete more than 300 active substances including growth factors, vitamins, albumin, and antibodies, mimicking healthy tears. These aid in coagulation, homeostasis, immune cell recruitment, inflammation, wound healing, angiogenesis, and cellular remodeling. Because of this, ASEDs are used to treat moderate to severe dry eye, which is not only a tear quantity problem but a tear quality problem. This affects how tears interact with your ocular surface.

You prepare for a healthy blood draw by drinking plenty of water and avoiding fatty foods the day before.
Blood will be drawn in the clinic using serum separating tubes. You can then sit in our lounge chairs, watch TV or read, receive IV therapy, or you can run an errand while the drops are being processed.
Your drawn blood is processed and separated.
The plasma is extracted and diluted with sterile ophthalmic saline per your eye doctor's orders, all within an aseptic closed system and gold standard filtration. The final solution is dispensed into up to 12 5ml eye dropper bottles, which are then packaged in a cold insulated sealed pouch for you to safely transport your drops home. All of this is done in about an hour in one convenient location.
Upon arrival home, you immediately place the pouch in the freezer. When you are ready to start your ASED therapy, you place one dropper bottle in the refrigerator at a time to thaw and use as prescribed. Please keep refrigerated when not in use.
